A.F.HARRIDGE, SEN After an illness extending over six months , Mr. Albert Fulford Harridge of Fitzroy Street, Kerang, died at his residence on Saturday last, at the age of 76 years. Mr. Harridge was born at sea, and landed in Australia with his parents as an infant. His first six years were spent in South Australia, and his family then moved to Victoria. As a young man, Mr. Harridge learned a great deal of the hardships of the pioneer and spent some years as a contractor on New South Wales and Queensland stations, fencing and dam sinking in the unpeopled open spaces being the occupations which attracted him. He married at Bendigo, his wife sharing his roving contractor_s life until they settled in Kerang in 1888, and here they have lived ever since. Mr. Harridge conducted a tailoring business in Victoria street, Kerang for many years, and was thus widely known right throughout the district. Outside his home and business interests he found recreation and useful pleasure with the Victorian Rangers, in which body he for long held the rank of Color-Sergeant. On the visit of the Prince of Wales (now His Majesty, King George) to Australia in connection with the opening of the Commonwealth Parliament, Mr. Harridge, as the oldest Color-Sergeant in Victoria, was honoured by being called on to receive the colors from the Royal visitor. He was awarded during his military career both the Commonwealth and Imperial long service medals, and among his treasured possessions at his home were medals and cups won by him in competition with the rifle and other medals and cups in connection with his company_s work. Mr. Harridge travelled widely in Victoria with companies of Rangers and was generally in charge of a company on these tours. The Druids_ Lodge was another activity in which Mr. Harridge was for many years an active member, and he was also a manager of the Kerang Common for years. A Little more than three years ago Mr. and Mrs. Harridge celebrated their golden wedding, and at that happy time of family re-union the public of Kerang and district joined warmly in congratulations to the honoured pair. Mr. Harridge was truly a good citizen. An honourable man, a kindly man, happy in his own home and in his town, a good friend and neighbour, his death has removed one whom Kerang respected greatly. His memory will be most fondly treasured by those who knew him best, and a very wide district will revere his name, and extends its sympathy to the widow and family. Messrs A.F. and T.H. Harridge are sons. Another son, Ernest, gave his life in the war. Daughters are Mrs. J. Denyer, Warracknabeal, (Lilian E.), Mrs Kilpatrick, New Zealand (Ada), Mrs. E. Day, Kew (Julia G.); Mrs. C. H. Whitelaw (Charlotte M.); Mrs. Jas. Booth, Merino (Maria), and Mrs. J. H. Ibbs, Kerang (Stella). The funeral took place to the Kerang cemetery on Sunday, the Rev. W. H. Holloway conducting the service at the graveside. after 9 May 1930 at Kerang, Victoria, Australia. |
