Note: Handcross Alley from "Croydon in the Past". Chapter "Croydon in 1851 and 1882":

NORTH END
Just beyond the new premises lately erected by Messrs. Batchelar and
Sons, upholsterers, was Archbishop Tenison's School, now removed to
Selsdon Road. At that time Handcross Alley was continued from Church
Street to North End, but the upper portion has been widened and is now
called Keeley New Road.

HANDCROFT ROAD AND THE DISTRICT AROUND
This being a very old road (forming at one time the chief road through
the "old town" of Croydon), has changed almost less that any other;
most of the small streets leading therefrom, including Adelaide Street,
Albion Street, and Myrtle Street, were occupied, but Croydon Grove,
Sumner Road, and Canterbury Road were only projected.

Comment on Rootsweb: It was Handcross Alley, now long gone. I have it
on the 1861 census but it doesn't appear on the 1898 map. It ran
approximately parallel with, and about 100 to 200 yards to the east of
Tamworth Road, which is still there in Croydon town centre.5
